How to make a sizable charitable donation from your ira tax free

If you are over 70 Ѕ years old, want to make a gift for a special charitable project, but your only liquid asset is your IRA, I have good news for you. On August 17, 2006 the Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA 2006) was signed into law. This nearly 1,000 page piece of legislation marked the most sweeping changes to the pension arena in 30 years. Let me give you two common examples that contain problems faced by seniors solved by PPA 2006… Roger and Claire are retired. Roger spent his working career in the aerospace industry. He was more than well compensated and over the years accumulated a very large 401(k) plan. The plan grew nearly 500% during one 5 year bull market. When he retired, he rolled his 401(k) into an IRA. Other than their home, the IRA is far and away their biggest asset. For years, Roger and Claire have been supporters of the Humane Society. Their local chapter is building an entire new wing on to their kennels. Roger and Claire would love to make a significant donation—somewhere in the neighborhood of $50,000 to $100,000. Bill and Diane both worked during their entire careers. Mary taught 6th grade for 40 years. Bill was a career military officer. After his retirement, he spent another 20 years working in the private sector. Bill and Diane have more retirement plans than Carter has pills. Like Roger, Bill has a large IRA. When Bill turned 70 Ѕ, he was required to start taking the minimum required distributions each year from his IRA. But Bill and Diane don’t need the income; their other retirement income sources are more than adequate. Nevertheless, Bill must take these RMDs and pay tax on them as income. Bill and Diane have been active in their church all their married life, all 45 years of it. Their church just bought a new organ. It was a purchase of necessity inasmuch as the old (very old) organ was becoming hazardous to play. The organist had to be careful or the organ would start to smoke. So, needless to say, the church did not pay cash for the organ; the majority of it was financed. Bill and Diane would like to pay off the organ. Both Roger and Claire and Bill and Diane are warm-hearted people. Their devotion to charitable causes and their church is representative of the many people who support charitable organizations which reach out to help people. But, prior to the passage of PPA 2006, their generosity could have been thwarted by several things… 1. In both cases, their principal liquid asset was an IRA. Neither couple had other assets from which to make a gift. 2. If the large sums were withdrawn from their IRAs, they would be subject to ordinary income tax. 3. If given to a charity, rules which limit the amount that could be deducted as a charitable contribution would have to be followed. This means that they may still have to pay tax on a portion of their IRA withdrawals. But thanks to provisions in PPA 2006, Roger and Claire can make their gift to the Humane Society and Bill and Diane can pay off their church’s new organ using money from their IRAs and not pay any tax on the withdrawals. But they have to follow the rules… 1. First, you must be at least 70 Ѕ. 2. You can give up to $100,000. 3. This only applies to 2006 and 2007. 4. You can’t withdraw the money from your IRA and then give it to your charitable cause. The transfer must be made directly from the custodian of the IRA to the charity. 5. These gifts, called IRA charitable rollovers, count towards your required minimum distribution for the year. 6. IRA charitable rollovers are not permitted for gifts to donor advised funds and supporting organizations. However, there are some exceptions that apply to funds held by community foundations: scholarship, field of interest, and designated funds qualify. So the first step is to contact your intended cause to see how they are classified and whether or not the law allows an IRA charitable rollover gift. 7. The gift must be a pure gift. In other words, there can’t be any personal benefit strings attached like tickets to an event. 8. You don’t have to report the IRA charitable rollover as income. 9. However, you don’t get a charitable deduction for your gift. Sorry, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. This new law is a real winner. In these two examples, the Humane Society is able to build new kennels and a church pays off an organ they thought they were going to have to finance. The donors were able to make it happen despite the fact that the only real asset they had was an IRA. I hope this law is extended beyond 2007. But like anything new, the name of the game is to communicate what is possible. The law was put into effect in late August 2006, so that didn’t leave a lot of time for IRA charitable rollovers that year. If you, or anyone you know, has an IRA and would like to make a gift, make them aware of this new option. If you are involved in a public charity, help their planned giving officer get the word out. I do not dispense tax advice. It is imperative that you consult with your tax advisor and the charity to make sure it is qualified and that the gift is made in the proper manner.

Is an interest only mortgage for you

Many people get confused when it comes to interest only mortgages. It’s no wonder. There is actually no such thing as a mortgage which you only pay the interest on. With an interest only mortgage, you still have to pay down the principal on the loan. What you actually get is an interest only payment method which lasts for a set period and then you revert to a more traditional type of mortgage. As you probably know, your mortgage payment mostly goes to pay off the interest; typically 95% of your payment goes toward the loan interest. So for a standard $100,000 mortgage at 6% interest, your monthly payment would be $600. Of that $600, $100 goes to pay down your principal and $500 goes to pay the interest charges. Interest only mortgages involve jumbo loans and the difference in the monthly loan payment gets larger as the loan amount increases. So while there is a difference of $100 for a $100,000 loan, the difference on a $1,000,000 loan would be $1000. Savvy investors can use that $1000 per month to leverage their income and build assets much faster. Interest only mortgages have traditionally been used by investors or wealthy individuals who are able to make a profit on the principal part of their mortgage payment. However, today virtually anyone can obtain an interest only mortgage. The payment period of the interest only mortgage is based upon the adjustable rate mortgage. However, sometimes, it can be offered with a fixed rate as well. However, the payment period usually does not run for the entire loan term, even with a fixed rate mortgage. Interest only mortgages are only temporary; InterstFirst loans only allow interest only mortgage payments to be made for half of the total loan term. When the interest only mortgage payments come to an end, the amount of your loan payment will then rise to include both the interest and principal. Interest only mortgages have advantages for certain types of borrowers. For one thing, the payments at the onset are lower so this frees up additional cash to be used elsewhere It can be invested or it can be used for needed cash flow. The spare cash can be used in any manner such as additional income, college expenses, or to build savings. The catch is that after a certain time, your interest only payments will expire and then your loan payment will be higher each month thereafter. You are the only one who knows your situation and can determine if an interest rate mortgage is right for you. Consult with a banker or mortgage broker for advice and specific financial information such as projected monthly payments, then weigh your other mortgage options before you decide.

Use a secured loan to put your financial woes in one basket

Perhaps the most common secured loan is a debt consolidation loan. A debt consolidation loan is secured most generally by using your home as collateral, once the equity on your home has been determined. Debt consolidation is a system that reduced debt by allowing the consumer to take all her or his debts and combine them into one debt and therefore one payment. While on the face of it this secured loan does not seem logical. Taking unsecured loans and putting them all in one basket that threatens the roof over your head if not paid. Where is the sense in that? Well, the sense in a secured debt consolidation loan is that you are replacing unsecured loans such as credit cards (that charge a very high rate of interest) with one whose interest rate is considerably less. This saves you money - sometimes a great deal of money. There is also a lot to be said for the ease and time efficiency of paying only one bill. In fact, a secured debt consolidation loan payment is usually made for the debtor by the company. She or he does not even have to write the check or put the stamp on the envelope. What is especially good about a secured debt consolidation loan is that you have a company and representative working with you that is often on a first name basis with many lender representatives. She or he can step in and negotiate a really great low interest rate for you, may even get the balance reduced on your current debts, get your lenders to write off some late fees, and set the term when all your debts are going to be paid off. The amount a consumer can save with a secured debt consolidation loan can be very great. Using this kind of secured loan to get yourself out of debt is so much more financially advantageous than just continually paying off the minimum balance on each of your credit cards for the rest of your natural life. Perhaps even more important that the savings you will see with this kind of secured loan is the fact that your creditors relish your consolidating your debts in this manner. Creditors fear the alternative - your bankruptcy - which could wipe out their debt and their ability to recoup their money, or at least most of their money. For the consumer the secured debt consolidation loan is preferable to a bankruptcy because the first improves your credit standing. The second destroys it, for at least seven years anyway. There are literally hundreds of debt consolidation lending firms in the United States alone, with many opportunities online to apply for a debt consolidation loan, get advice on the best options, compare rates and terms and even be approved. Some debt consolidation firms will purport to give you an online quote but actually ask the questions and then ask for your contact information so their sales people can call you with the estimate. You will want to avoid these if you can. Look for an online secured debt consolidation lender site that actually provides the estimate of what you could borrow and at what rate and payment schedule and then allows you to be pre-approved - all on the Web. What you will typically need to supply is the market value of your home, the balance on your mortgage, your payments and your rate of interest, how much you need to borrow, and your zip code. From this you will get an idea on what your secured loan would look like.

Mortgage cover could save the roof over your head if you were to become ill or unemployed

Mortgage cover could mean the difference between you losing the roof over your head or keeping it if you were to become ill and unable to work, suffer an accident or become unemployed by such as redundancy. The downside to the cover is that it is not suitable for all circumstances due to the exclusions which exist in all policies. Common reasons which could stop you from being eligible to make a claim include if you are only working part time, suffering from an ongoing illness or if you are retired. Other exclusions could be added on by the provider so you do have to check the terms and conditions of the policy before you buy the cover to make sure that you would be eligible to make a claim. Homeowners who rely on the State to help if you come out of work are leaving themselves open to disappointment and are putting the roof over their heads at risk because the State does often not give enough financial assistance even if you are entitled to receive help. If you get behind on your mortgage then you risk losing your home to repossession. However, mortgage cover can stop this by giving you an income once you have been out of work for a set period of time. The time varies that you have to wait but is usually from the 31st to the 90th day after the event and once a policy has begun to payout it would then continue to do so for between 12 and 24 months which gives you enough time to get back on your feet or find another job. Mortgage cover has been branded with the same bad image as loan payment protection and while mis-selling has occurred in all sectors mortgage insurance has faired better. However on saying this, the latest firm to not only receive a fine but also have the Chief Executive handed a personal fine was a mortgage firm. This is even more astounding when you realize the fine handed out was just recently and well after the Financial Services Authority set out guidelines for improvements that had to made to the sector. Problems for the sector began in 2005 after the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) received a super complaint from the Citizens Advice Bureau. This resulted in the investigation by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) which led to several high street names receiving fines before the OFT referred the sector on to the Competition Commission. The latter is now conducting an in-depth investigation with the results of their findings anticipated in early 2009. If you want peace of mind that you have quality mortgage cover whilst also getting the cheapest premiums for the cover then you have to get a quote from an independent specialist provider of payment protection. A specialist will be more ethical than the high street lender and will not go for the huge profits that high street lenders rake in each year, they will ensure that you have access to the key facts needed to determine if a policy is suitable.

How to find the best rates on homeowner s insurance in arizona

To find the best rate on homeowners insurance in Arizona residents should perform a self audit before approaching any insurance company. Below are a few things that insurance companies like to see: 1.Alarm System: Insurance companies like to insure homes that are well protected. Installing an alarm system not only will help to keep you and your family safe, it may also be the source of a premium discount. Talk to your insurance company and let them know that you have a functioning alarm system for your home. 2.Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detector: Proving to your insurance company that you are doing what you can to protect your home and prevent losses bodes well when it comes to premium discounts. Let them know that you’ve got working smoke and/or carbon monoxide detectors. 3.Loss Proof your home: Insurance companies have loss control services. Talk to them to find out what else you might be able to do do loss proof your home. For instance, installing windows that are better resistant to windstorms may earn a discount. 4.Know Your Coverages: Be aware of the difference in policy risks. A policy that is written on an ‘All Risk’ basis will be more expensive than an ‘Named Peril’ policy. All risk will cover you for all risks except for those excluded by the policy. Named peril will only cover you for those perils specifically outlined on the policy. All risk is more expensive than named peril because it covers more. 5.Quit Smoking: Smoking is a leading cause of fire related deaths. Insurance companies offer a lower rate to households without smokers. 6.Group Plan: If you are a member of an association, such as a business or an alumni organization, you will benefit from a lower rate if you purchase your insurance as part of the group. After completing the self-audit, make sure you get quotes from more than one company. Shop around.

How to compare low cost health insurance in alabama

Being able to afford health insurance is a big problem for many people here in Alabama. In fact, the problem has become so severe that close to 17% of all Alabama residents cannot afford health insurance of any kind. Fortunately the state of Alabama has made low-cost health insurance available to many people who might not otherwise be able to afford it. Children under the age of eighteen, college students, pregnant women and others may be able to qualify for low-cost health insurance through one or more state-sponsored programs. For those individuals who do not qualify for a state-sponsored program there are still several simple things you can do that may help to reduce the cost of your monthly health insurance premium. And once you know what things you can do to lower the cost of your health insurance, then it will be time to get online and compare the cost of your premium-saving policy at every health insurance company that sells policies in Alabama until you have found the very lowest cost possible for the insurance you need. Let's start with some lifestyle changes. These are the most difficult things for most people to do, even though they can potentially save the most on your health insurance. Don't smoke or use chew or any other tobacco product. You know in your heart of hearts that tobacco products are not good for your health, and insurance companies know this too. That's why they charge tobacco users anywhere from 20% to 50% more for their health insurance than they charge non-smokers. Losing weight is even more difficult than stopping smoking for most people, but if you are overweight you are going to pay more for your health insurance. Again, this is simply a fact of life. The good news is that losing even a small amount of weight can potentially drop you down on the insurance company's weight chart and can potentially save you hundreds of dollars each and every year in premium payments. Every little bit can potentially help. Are your weekends filled with extreme or dangerous sports or hobbies? As fun and exciting as they may be, the fact is you are going to pay more for health insurance if you put your life and health at risk unnecessarily. The same goes for driving a fancy sports car. And were you aware that your credit rating can also affect how much you pay for your health insurance? As strange as it may seem, the better your credit score the lower your health insurance premium. Group health insurance is always less expensive than individual health care, plus group plans will often overlook smoking, weight and some pre-existing conditions that would drive the cost through the roof if you were purchasing an individual policy. If your place of employment does not offer a group plan start asking around at any club, organization or association you belong to. You may be surprised to find that some group you never even thought about offers its members group health insurance. Ask your friends and co-workers if any of them belong to a group, club or association that offers group health insurance - and then see if you can join. Ask if any religious organization you belong to offers its members group health insurance. Look into joining an HMO a PPO or some other form of health maintenance organization. If your favorite doctor is not part of an HMO then you may have to switch doctors, but often you can keep your same doctor if you join a PPO. See if one of these types of groups makes economic sense to you. If you own a home-based business it may be possible to qualify for group health insurance even if your only employee is a spouse. Ask your insurance agent if this is possible in your case. But even if group health is not a possibility, it still may be possible to deduct your health insurance payments from your taxes if you own your own business - and the tax savings could help offset the cost of your premiums to the point where health insurance is more affordable than you thought. What about your co-pay and your deductible? If you can increase your co-payment and/or your deductible you can lower the cost of your health insurance. Obviously increasing your co-pay and/or your deductible must be considered carefully as any increase in either represents cash that is coming out of your pocket. It's finally time for you to take the tips and tricks you picked up from this article and use them when filling out the form on at least 3 of the websites which allow you to compare health insurance prices among the different insurance companies. Make sure that you fill out the form exactly the same way on all three of the comparison websites you've chosen and then simply pick the company with the lowest cost (being careful to choose a company that you feel confident will still be around when you need them), and your job is done! You have now compared low cost health insurance in Alabama, you've picked the lowest-priced company and you can feel good about the fact that you are getting the coverage you need at a price you can afford.

Protection slashing the risk factor of secured loans

Loans in which the borrowers home is held as collateral, or secured loans, are very popular, and are often considered favourable because of the general ease of borrowing through secured loans. Secured loans are also sometimes known as Home Equity Loans or Homeowner loans. Those with a negative credit history often find secured loans to be the easiest way of borrowing money. Secured loans, however, are very risky, especially for those with a proven history of late or skipped payments. Even the term secured loans is somewhat deceiving, as the security really belongs to the bank or lending institution, and not to the borrower. Any person borrowing money through secured loans runs the risk of losing his or her home in the case of any situation that renders the borrower incapable or repaying secure loans according to schedule. Those with adverse credit should carefully assess their needs, spending habits, and repayment abilities before applying for secured loans. If there is no other option than to pursue secured loans, borrowers would be wise to try to find a very easy repayment plan that is suitable to their financial state. Many borrowers are rather wary and even afraid of secured loans. This unease regarding secured loans is not entirely unfounded, and a wise borrower will look into alternative options before pursuing secured loans. However, there are ways to reduce the risk involved with secured loans, and one of these is arranging a payment protection plan. Secured loans can usually be granted with the addition of some type of payment protection plan. These payment protection plans for secured loans are basically a type of insurance. The premiums are added to the monthly payments that borrowers make on secured loans. Then, in the case of sickness or accidents, the borrower is not held responsible for repaying the amounts borrowed through secured loans. Payment protection on secured loans is generally a wise idea, because a person never knows when he or she may run into some type of trouble. Because secured loans are so risky to the homeowner, some type of insurance such as these payment protection plans, offer an ease of mind to anyone who is borrowing through secured loans. The loss of a job is also something that the payment protection plans of most secure loans cover in some form. In todays world, when no one can be absolutely sure what will happen with regards to their employment, the risk of secured loans are lessened with the addition of payment protection plans. In some cases, payment protection plans can actually be a benefit to the borrower after secured loans are paid. Many times, lenders will actually return the amount paid through the payment protection plan. In one sense, people can actually make the most of their secured loans by using the payment protection plan as a type of investment. Overall, as a general rule, if people plan to take out secured loans, they would probably be wise to purchase some type of payment protection plan as well.

Key to wealth building approaching your credit rationally

The primary purpose of good credit is to save you money by helping you procure lower interest rates that otherwise wouldn’t be available to you. Interestingly, some consumers fail to recognize this fact when considering the appropriate option for debt resolution. The main reason for this is a lot of people interpret their credit on an emotional level instead of a rational one. That is, they think of their credit score as something more than it is---something more than just ONE tool that lenders look at to determine whether giving you a loan will be profitable for them---and it becomes a matter of pride, not a matter of financial health. In the end, the mistake of thinking about one’s credit on an emotional level instead of a rational one can cost a consumer buried in credit card debt and only able to afford minimum payments thousands of dollars in finance charges and even more in the years of life consumed by financial anxiety. Another part of the problem is that most people, even when trying to tackle the issue rationally, do not understand what makes up their credit score. The largest components of your credit score---your credit history and the amount you owe---are both influenced by debt settlement, one negatively (credit history) and one positively (the amount you owe). Although your credit history is marginally more important than the amount you owe when factoring your score, the difference (5%) is rarely enough to compensate for the savings from enrolling credit card debt into a settlement program. The more money you’re able to save from enrolling in a debt settlement program, the less the credit impact should be considered a factor. Why? Because any higher interest rates that you’ll end up paying down the road as a result of the credit impact will rarely outweigh the money you saved by settling credit card debt. So who in the end benefits the most from a settlement program----1) people who owe a lot; 2) people who can only afford to pay the minimums; 3) people who are paying high interest; and 4) all of the above. To illustrate this point, consider the following examples. Let’s assume that you owe $30,000 in credit card debt. Your average annual percentage rate on these cards is 19 percent, and you are only able to afford the minimum monthly payment, which in your case adds up to $750 total. Given this scenario, it would take you approximately 12 years and $108,000 before finally you dug out of debt. In a debt settlement program, however, it would take approximately 3 years and $16,500 total to eliminate your debt. That’s a $91,500 difference versus making the minimum payments. Rarely will your subsequent higher interest rates ever make up the savings from debt settlement, especially when you consider the fact that you can always refinance any loans once you’ve built up enough equity. One of the most frustrating things to come across in our industry is a consumer who owes a lot and is only able to afford the minimums, but was still unwilling to sacrifice their credit even in the slightest bit in order to climb out of debt and save money. I recently dealt with a consumer from the South Side of Chicago who was $40,000 in the hole with credit cards. His interest rates were at 29 percent and he was only able to afford the minimum payments, which amounted to $1700 total in his case. When he tried to convince the creditors to lower the rates, they simply told him that based on the amount of outstanding debt on his credit report he was too much a credit risk, so they needed to charge him higher interest. When he tried to obtain a home equity loan, he was turned down for the same reason, even though his credit score was in the high 600s. Yet when I mentioned that our debt settlement program might impact his credit negatively, he scoffed. There was no way he would ever affect his credit negatively. At the end of our conversation, I tried to referring him to our affiliate credit counseling company, but he wasn’t interested because enrollment in a debt management plan would appear on his credit. His decision to stay on course with the minimum payments will ultimately cost him over $20,000 a year and probably his young children the opportunity to attend a 4 year college, maybe more. By failing to be realistic and rational in his approach to the impact of debt settlement on his credit, this consumer worsened his financial situation significantly. He thought of his credit score not as something that can save him money by getting him lower interest rates on loans, but rather as some sort of social marker on where he was at in life. He considered the idea of a negatively affected credit score probably much like someone in the Middle Ages thought about the idea of being excommunicated or the way a 14 year old feels about not being part of the “in crowd” at school. When considering your debt resolution options, I urge you to look at the options available to you realistically. When comparing debt settlement to the other options available to most consumers I find myself famous Winston Churchill quote on democracy: Debt settlement is the worst form of debt resolution, except for all the rest of them.

Dissecting credit card offers

I am always more than a little skeptical about signs that shout out "Zero Percent Interest" or "Flat Fifty Percent Off". The only thought that runs through my mind at those times is: "Where is the catch?" There usually is a catch. The question is: Does the catch overpower the benefits? That is the question that I ask myself just before I buy a new credit card or enter a sale. I usually find that the catch is somewhat insignificant when you compare it with the bigger picture. I usually have a lot of these cynical moments when I am on the lookout for a new credit card. It seems to me that there are too many great offers going. It is as though they are too eager to sell me those credit cards. Why is there so much enthusiasm? I mean, why would a company offer something like interest free credit cards? What is in it for them? And what about the zero percent balance transfer credit cards? What is the deal with them? Well, I think once you do away with the skepticism, you find that most of these offers are more or less true to what they say. Most interest free credit cards provide a deal where you don't have to pay interest for a given number of months. After all, credit card companies are bogged down by immense competition. Each has to attract more customers than its nearest rival. The same logic holds with 0% balance transfer credit cards. The credit card companies want to do business with you. They want to sell you their credit cards. So they have to take the help of gimmicks like this to win you over to their side. In fact, balance transfer credit cards are a prime example of how credit card companies lure away the customers of other credit card companies. How does this work? Suppose you have a credit card with one company but wish you could get a different credit card that charges a different rate of interest, you could consider getting a hold of a balance transfer credit card. And there will be lots of cards that make you offers that you will not want to refuse. Competition is everything in the world of today. Everyone is in the rat race to make more business, and everyone is in the rat race to win. So even though you should not be taking offers like "Zero Percent Interest" at face value, remind yourself that you are a potential customer. In this day and age, it is the customer who is the king!

The realities about bad credit debt consolidation

You have seen those ads on TVpanies specializing in bad credit debt consolidation. These companies claim that they can help you consolidate your debt in spite of your bad credit, no matter how much debt you have or how far behind you are. Yep, they claim to have the magic answers to your financial problems. After they're done with you, you'll be left with, " just one easy monthly payment!" There are some companies who legitimately want to help people with bad credit consolidate their debt. These companies usually charge a reasonable up-front fee, avoid making extravagant claims and will offer professional references upon request. Then there is the "other" type of bad credit consolidation company. These types of companies will prey upon your fears and offer you hope that somewhere out there lies and easy solution to your problems. That bad news is, the latter type of bad credit debt consolidation companies is far more common than the former. Debt Consolidation Companies: What Exactly Do They Do? Basically, what a bad credit consolidation company does is that it acts as your mediator. They talk to your creditors and try to lower both your interest rates and monthly payments. Once they have reached an agreement with your creditors, they will let you know what your monthly total will be. Then you will send this monthly amount to the debt consolidation company and they will distribute the money to all your creditors. Now in theory, that's what they're supposed to do. The companies that are running scams often keep much of that money you sent them and call it "administration fees" or " loan origination fees", even though no loan has been or originated. What this means to you is that your creditors will continue to harass you and report your account as delinquent and unpaid to the credit reporting agencies. The money that you sent to these companies never makes it to the creditors. Does Legitimate Bad Credit Debt Consolidation Really Exist? There are legitimate bad credit debt consolidation companies. The legitimate companies will not send you unsolicited e-mails or any kind of mail unsolicited. You also won't find them advertising on late-night television. If your credit score is very poor, chances are you probably won't qualify for unsecured loans throw a bank. However, you may be able to refinance your house or your car to pay off any unsecured debt. Best to talk to your bank or mortgage broker. Another good idea is to go see a legitimate financial planner. Let this professional assess your budget and then help you find ways to get out of debt and stay out of debt. One other way to consolidate debt it is to transfer all your unsecured debt to one low interest credit card. This approach does have a few drawbacks though. If your credit really sucks, the credit card company may decide to hike up your interest rate without warning. If you happen to have more then just one credit card, you may have to either cut them up or put them away in a safe place to avoid the temptation of racking up new charges on them. Of course you should make the minimum monthly payments, more if you can afford it, to the card left with the balance of your debts. Despite the fact that you have bad credit, debt consolidation is still possible. Just make sure that you're working with a reputable company that truly does want to help you get out of debt.

Credit cards finding the right one may be a challenge

As you look through the daily newspaper, you are probably amazed by the number of credit card offers advertised. While shopping around the city you find credit card offers are omnipresent. This is also true with television which also advertises many different credit card offers. There is no getting around it, credit card offers are everywhere you go. Do you wonder why there are so many credit card offers? Well, to be straight-forward, the primary reason for so many offers is that the credit card business is highly profitable for credit card issuers. After looking over the situation, when there seems to be an endless number of credit card offers, how do you determine what is the best credit card offer for you? Everyone wants to get the best credit card offer and we know the spending habits of one person, more than likely is very different from that of another person. Credit card users lifestyles vary and therefore their spending choices vary too. So, to decide which credit card offer is best for you, you need to evaluate the type of credit card you want, perhaps need, based on your lifestyle and your spending habits. Recommendations from other credit card users are sometime valuable, but it actually comes down to your personal needs evaluation to determine which credit card you should select. If you travel frequently by airline, an airline credit card may be a better selection for you than a general purpose card. Airline credit cards offer discounts, rebates and other kinds of rewards when the credit card is used for making airline travel purchases. Also you may find, if you have a favorite retail store, where you do a great deal of shopping, that it is beneficial to check if the retailer is also a credit card issuer and if they offer a credit card beneficial to you. Many big retail chains do offer credit cards to their patrons and their credit cards offers rebates, discounts rewards and more. With these credit cards you get reward points for making purchases any place but the rewards and discounts are higher on the purchases made at the retail store issuing the credit card. Many gas stations, grocery stores and other retailers offer credit cards as well. These cards also offer special benefits and rewards to their users. If you are researching credit card choices, you will find many exceptional credit card offers. Still, you do not want to enroll to all the credit card offers available. You should evaluate your needs and order them. Then, determine which credit card offers best suit your needs. When you select your credit card, the one that will effectively handle most of your needs, while giving maximum benefits is the one you should choose.

When should an employee choose a 401k rollover and why

An employee should select a 401k rollover if he wants to refrain from having to look after and manage multiple 401k accounts and also pay extra in terms of the account charges towards administration of all those accounts. In this way, the account owner can continue to achieve decades of tax-deferred compounding that his invested funds earn in a 401k account. A major advantage of a 401k-retirement plan is that the employee has an option to retain it throughout his career. When changing a job/employer, the investor can choose any of the four alternatives: 1.) Leave the funds in the old employer’s 401k plan – An employee can choose to leave his funds in the old employer’s 401k plan by paying record keeping and other charges to the account administrator to manage the account. The current employment of an employee does not affect continuing the 401k-account with a previous employer. If the employee has switched jobs several times over, it can lead to multiple 401k accounts leading to complexity in managing them as well as incurring their separate management fee by the employee. 2.) Undertake a 401k rollover to the new employer’s 401k plan – An employee can refrain from having to look after multiple 401k accounts by choosing to rollover to the new employer’s 401k plan. This becomes possible if the employee gets a new job offer before leaving his current employer. Choosing this option tends to simplify things for an employee. However, before going for a rollover, the account owner must check the investment options of the new 401k-plan into which he is rolling over his previous account. The employee can even choose to rollover into an IRA account. 3.) Undertake a 401k rollover into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) – Choosing to rollover a 401k account is considered the best alternative for those employees who are interested in building up a comfortable retirement fund as it allows an employee’s savings to continue compounding tax-deferred while providing total control at the same time over asset allocation. This is how a rollover is undertaken: The account owner orders a distribution of his current 401k plan assets (this is reported in the IRS Form 1099-R.) After receiving his assets, the account owner must put them into a new retirement plan within a span of sixty days; such a deposit must be reported in the IRS Form 5498. An account owner cannot undertake more than one 401k rollover within a span of twelve months. 4.) Withdraw the funds, pay a 10% penalty fee and the taxes on amount withdrawn – If an employee decides to withdraw the proceeds, he has to pay a 10% penalty on a disincentive for undertaking a withdrawal. Moreover, the proceeds invite regular income tax rates. This makes the withdrawal process all the more expensive to the account owner. It is deliberately designed in such a manner to dissuade employees from using up their 401k funds before the age of retirement. In such a situation, the financial loss comes from the decades of tax-deferred compounding that the invested funds could have earned had the account owner not chosen to withdraw the proceeds. Always consult a financial professional before making any decisions.

Canadian dollar performance update spring 2007

During recent months, the Canadian dollar traded a tight range against Sterling between 2.2500 and 2.3000. This follows a sharp uptrend in GBP/CAD from a low around 1.9737 (02/03/06) to a recent high at 2.3567 (23/01/07) caused by expectations of higher interest rates in the UK, coupled with interest rate stagnation in Canada. At the same time, the US$ has weakened, forcing the exchange over US$2 per GBP and down to US$1.11 per CAD giving UK customers a boost while detracting the value for our southern neighbours. In the UK, the Bank of England left interest rates on hold in April, however, expectations of higher rates in the months ahead continue to offer support to Sterling. With a buoyant housing market and strong levels of consumer spending, the market is expecting that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will be forced to raise rates at least once more in an attempt to dampen down inflationary pressures. The headline Consumer Price Index (CPI – the most recognised measure of inflation in the UK) is currently running at 2.8% y/y against a target rate of 2.0% and raising interest rates is the most obvious way of combating rising prices. Meanwhile, Canada has been faced by interest rate stagnation following the rise to 4.25% in May 2006. Risks to the Canadian economy remain finely balanced with the threat of an economic slowdown filtering across the boarder from the US. As its biggest trading partner, any signs of a struggling US economy may impact the Canadian economy although this has not really been the case so far in 2007. In similar fashion to the UK, the Canadian housing market remains robust with The Canadian Real Estate Association reporting strong sales of existing homes in February and record high average house prices. The Canadian Dollar is also likely to remain well supported against the US$ by rising oil prices given that oil exports represent a large percentage of the Canadian economy. Looking back to March 2006 GBP/CAD traded a low of 1.9737 (02/03/06) indicating a difference of CAD 32,300 in less than twelve months when looking to transfer Ј100,000. Therefore, anyone looking to transfer funds between Canada and the UK should pay considerable attention to the GBP/CAD exchange rate as it can have such a dramatic impact upon their future wealth. Should you be looking to move large sums it definitely pays to monitor the markets and be aware of international factors that can affect which direction currencies will go. The debt and ongoing military interventions of the US will undoubtedly have some effect on the US$ against the CAD, though the weak US$ will most likely help boost the exports from their struggling economy. The recent trend of the Dow Jones to smash new records and factory orders starting to increase does point towards the start of a turn around for the US which, if fuelled by the exports will be another reason for the US to try to maintain a weaker dollar. Advising migrants and businesses of currency movements and protecting them from the risks associated with fluctuating exchange rates is the speciality of currency brokers. Whilst nobody can guarantee future currency movements due to the sheer size and number of participants in the market, both personal and business accounts can increase their bottom lines in dramatic fashion by taking expert advice.

Avoiding repossession of your home

One of the most difficult situations for anyone to face is that of potentially losing theirhome. This is especially difficult if you have lived in your home for several years and have children who have never lived any place else. The stress is often more difficult for the children who must leave their friends, and it can be traumatic if there are household pets who will not be able to come along with you are forced to leave. Is there a way to avoid home repossession, or foreclosure as it is commonly called? The best way to avoid it is to contact the lender as soon as you find out that you are unable to make the payments. If it's a matter of reduced income, the lender may be willing to reduce your payments and accept only the interest portion until you can work something out with your income issues. The key is to keep the lender informed – don't just skip the payments or short pay without contacting the lender. Avoiding speaking with your lender makes it appear as though you are trying to avoid your obligation or are irresponsible enough to think it will go away on its own. Your lender cannot help you work out a solution unless you contact him to let him know that you have a problem. What happens if you have a lender who just refuses to work with you? Unless you have had a history of late payments, you will not usually find that happening, but that doesn't mean that there are no lenders out there who don't care about anything but getting their money. When you do run across those who are not willing to work with you, you have to know other ways to work through the problem of being unable to make payments on your home. Although you don't want to make threats that you are unable to keep, if you have a lender who is truly unsympathetic to your needs, he will change his mind if he feels that you are a candidate for bankruptcy. After all, even a Chapter 13 will give you up to five years to bring your payments current, and the lender cannot override the decision of the court as long as you make your payments every month. Debt management is another way to avoid losing your home when you have an uncooperative lender. Unlike filing a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, the lender is not obligated to accept the terms that a debt management counselor offers. In most cases, they are more than willing to help you work through a program that will allow you to keep your home, but you do sometimes find lenders who are unwilling to bend at all to help you. If you are unwilling or unable to file bankruptcy, and your lender is unwilling to work with you or a debt management counselor, you may have no alternative but to locate a lender who is willing to pay off your current mortgage and allow you to start fresh.
